Tipster Ice Universe (opens in a new tab). It seems that the upcoming Samsung flagship phones will have a larger main sensor to rival the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

In the first tweet, IU reiterated the rumor that the S23 Ultra will use a 200MP main camera for this content. The sensor will be the “unreleased HP2,” referring to Samsung Semiconductor’s 200MP sensor ISOCELL HP series. He added that he was” nearly 100 sure.”

Samsung has already produced HP1

Samsung has formerly produced HP1 and HP3 detectors in this line. IU responded to another user (opens in new tab). However HP2 will be the best of the bunch.

Like the previous Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy S20 Ultra, the Galaxy S22 Ultra uses a 108MP camera. This is one of the highest resolution sensors you’ll find on a smartphone.

Step up to 200MP and you’ll get more detail in your shots. Brightness can be improved by using pixel-binning to combine the light data of pixels together. The S22 Ultra’s camera follows the original 108MP.

In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are expected to feature. A new 48MP primary sensor with 8K video support. Clear That resolution is well below the 200MP Samsung can offer for the S23 Ultra, but megapixels aren’t everything.

This is where things get more interesting. And IU’s second tweet hinted that the S23 Ultra’s 200MP sensor will use 0.6μm (micrometer) pixels.

Looking at earlier tweets from IU, it places the HP2’s pixel size between the HP1 (0.64μm) and the HP3 (0.54μm). These are only very small size differences. However, sitting between the two extremes allows the HP2 to balance overall sensor size with the amount of light it can capture.

We’ve already seen what camera sensors of this resolution can do with the Motorola X30 Pro/Edge 30 Pro, which uses an HP1 sensor for its 200MP primary camera.

It will be interesting to see how Samsung builds on the updated HP3 sensor with its own powerful camera processing and effective advanced camera apps like Expert RAW.
